India
Trivandrum in the southern State of Kerala & Amritsar in the Punjab are currently the start and finish points of the tours within India. Prior to the commencement of the Journey you can relax and familiarise yourself in some of the finest Hotels that India has to offer. Alternatively, you can stay in a youth Hostel or sleep in a tent by the side of the road if that’s your preference.
Join us for Tiffin - The route through India will be of your own making, but we do offer our own diversions along the way. You can, if you wish, join us and your fellow rickshaw travelers for Tiffin. We hold Tiffin at venues such as the Maharaja Palace in Bangalore and the Jai Vilas Palace in Gwalior, just south of Agra in central India.
Tiffin in India is a very traditional and hospitable affair comprising rice, dal, curry, vegetables, chapattis and spicy meats, but we also add into the mix, English Tiffin with tea, scones and jam. In these historical locations with great company, outstanding settings and a common cause, these events become etched in every Charity Explorers memory - for ever.
For expeditions starting in southern India, our intrepid explorers are be able to take in the delights of the some of the following locations:
From Kerala, north along the coast to Goa lie empty roads and palm fringed sandy beeches, embraced by the turquoise Arabian Sea, where explorers may choose to continue North along the coast road towards Chiplun and Mumbai. Alternatively you may choose to head inland through Karnataka. Stopping at the Princely and legendary city of the Maharajas – Mysore, with its aura of faded grandeur. Once the home of Hyder Ali and his powerful son, the Tipu Sultan, the site of several famous battles during the middle and late Eighteenth Century.
If you continue North East, you might explore the temple state of Tamilnadu, experiencing the former capital of French India – Pondicherry, made famous by Robert Lord Clives victory over the French. From here, the road heads North along the East Coast from Chennai (formally Madras) and on into Andrha Pradesh - the home of the legendary “Biryani”. From Chennai… well, work it out for yourself, after all, planning the route is all part of the adventure.
If you select the western route, you could pass through (or past) Mumbai, where you might choose to head northeast, venturing into Maharashtra and the Hindu and Mughal heartlands of Madhya Pradesh, perhaps stopping at the capital founded in the 11th Century –Bhopal. If you continue north from Bhopal, towards the Nations Capital, Delhi; you could go via the gateway of Bundelkhand and the city of the legendary fiery queen – Jhansi. Stopping at one of the most photographed sites in the world, described by Rudyard Kipling as “the embodiment of all things pure, all things holy and all things unhappy” – The Taj Mahal at Agra (the city of Lodhi Kings), probably India’s ultimate symbol.
From Agra, it’s a day’s drive to the nations Capital and conglomerate of seven cities – Delhi. Alternatively you might choose to head west into the Thar Desert; land of camels and snake charmers – Rajasthan. If you do, then it’s well worth pausing at the states capital – Jaipur the “Pink City”, which nestles amid the craggy Aravalli Hills, before continuing to explore this famed land of exotic Palaces and Impregnable Forts.
