Thailand
The Land of Smiles; Thailand is an intoxicating country with a rich blend of history, tradition and culture to assault your senses and nourish your soul. Thai people are immensely hospitable and very gracious; amazing sights abound and the total experience of this challenge will resonate for a lifetime.
Your mission; should you choose to accept it… Is to scatter from Bangkok and hit five checkpoints throughout the country before making for the finish line. The checkpoints may be visited in any order and via any number of routes, but you must visit them all. Negotiating the checkpoints will provide you with an opportunity to immerse yourselves in Thai culture and visit some truly stunning locations, a few examples are listed below.
Wat Pho is probably the most famous of Thailands many temples and is home to the emerald and reclining Buddhas. Call in on the ancient Siamese capital and temples of Ayuttaya. Pause for a while as you ‘barrel’ through Phuket and spend a little time on idyllic Phi Phi Island, made famous by the James Bond movie ‘The man with the golden gun’. Visit two of the cemeteries honouring thousands of allied POW’s held by the Japanese during the second world war and sacrificed during the construction of the notorious ‘death railway’ and infamous ‘bridge over the river Kwai in Kanchaburi on the Burmese border.
Long neck Karen, Paduang and Hmong villages nestle in the thick, lush, jungle covered mountains of the northern region of Thailand, an area of great natural beauty, and if you think you’re a party animal, roll your sleeves and stop off for a while as you pass through Pattaya, this is a town that will separate the ‘party’ wheat from the chaff.
Further examples of temples and areas of natural beauty you may wish to visit during your travels can be found here.
Now, what of the beneficiaries of our fun filled jaunt around this wonderful Kingdom? The town of Mae Sot on the Burmese border is home to The Mae Tao Clinic, one of our nominated charities. Dr Cynthia Muang has worked tirelessly since 1988 to establish a hospital, staffed by volunteers and offering free medical care. Many of the children have been maimed by land mines, orphaned and traumatized by the activities of the Burmese military. The work of these committed volunteers and the effect their efforts have on the children is humbling to behold. If you would like to visit the clinic as you travel along the Burmese border a call ahead to advise them of your desire to stop by would be appreciated.
This is not an expedition for the faint of heart, this is a real challenge, the adventure of a lifetime for a worthy cause, so… are you up for it?
